Why do people seek medical advice from unqualified strangers?

It baffles me that there are so many questions on forums like this where people seem to depend on unqualified, faceless, unaccountable sources for information about something as important as their health. Why?

See a real doctor. Get a professional opinion. Why do people seek medical advice from unqualified strangers?
The only thing I can figure is..the insurance situation is so terrible and the economy is so bad...people are loathe to go to the Dr. I also think people's confidence in the medical community is not what it once was...sometimes just getting the feedback of many helps you to compare and contrast what is going on with youself and contributes to your own research. I never take what the Dr. tells me at face value..I always do a little extra research on the side...knowing that Dr.s are human and can make a mistake and that we are all individuals..and I want to be proactive in my own health care...

and also because my Mom died as the result of a needless anesthesia accident..while under the care of ';professionals';...the gas lines being plugged in wrong in the 80's.and she died from anoxia at the age of 50 No..I don't mind checking behind at all.Why do people seek medical advice from unqualified strangers?
It baffles me too. But I feel that I am qualified to give good advice. I'm a 20 yr. Nursing Professional. I also have 15 yrs. as an EMT-Defib. Professional.

If you read my answers, many time I tell the person to go to a Dr..
it helps because they are sharing their fears with someone. there is someone out there that has had these symptoms or knows someone who has. i asked a medical question and received more information from the public than i got from my doctor.
Im sure they ARE going to go see a doctor but want to know other people's opinion and what they would do.

It baffles me how rude some people can be.
The cost of health insurance would only make them more ill.
cos they are scared that it might be something bad, so they ask the general public if anyone has similar things, and also saves em on a doctors visit which can cost a lot of money these days
Hey! i have a face!
