How can i be a better Civil Engineer (seeking advice from an experienced CE)?

I am on my second year of engineering. However sometimes (75 % of the time) i feel that the bullshit they teach me at school isn't going to be of any use. Now, i want to be an awesome Civil Engineer, i really love engineering and i love the pain in the **** it takes to become one. But really how can i be good at it from your personal experience. How can i be a better Civil Engineer (seeking advice from an experienced CE)?
You鈥檙e only in your second year, how do you know if it is BS or not?

Chemistry 鈥?A way to weed out the weak, NO. Unfortunately, chemistry will come back to haunt you in your Environmental Eng classes and your materials classes (i.e. Concrete?)

Physics 鈥?Another one of those courses meant to thin the crop? NO, very important in engineering. Not sure about your curriculum, but this may be your only chance to learn about dynamics and electrical stuff. Not to mention this is the foundation for Statics.

Humanities BS 鈥?Okay you may have me here. Wait, are you going to have to communicate with anyone? You wonder why our profession gets such a bad rap for not being able to communicate well. Punching numbers all day may be the ideal job to some, but in the real world that is only a fraction of the job.

Math Junk:

Diffy-Q 鈥?Not really needed in the real world, except on that damn Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. If you end up doing a lot of Environmental stuff, this may come up again.

Statistics 鈥?Wow, I wish I my professor spoke better English so I would have learned something in here. This one is really coming back to haunt me.

If you plan on seeking professional licensure, you will need everything they are attempting to teach you. Even if you are not planning on becoming a PE, I would highly recommend learning everything you can and make sure you take classes in every subject of Civil Eng. Also, make sure you take the FE your senior year. You just never know where live is going to take you.

I鈥檓 not trying to nag you, I was once in your boat and can relate to thinking everything is BS. Truth is, it鈥檚 not. If you are going to a good school, then you will have to take classes that you think aren鈥檛 relevant. In the grand scheme, they really are relevant and not BS.

Hang in there. The more interesting classes are coming and you will realize why you were put through all this torture. How can i be a better Civil Engineer (seeking advice from an experienced CE)?
Better than what?

To be a good Civil Engineer you need to learn as much of that bullshit that they are teaching you as you can.

You will have plenty of time to apply all that bullshit after you graduate and get a job.
